Gerald Piro, Executive Director Covenant House

Gerald (Gerry) Piro came to Covenant House Michigan with a great deal of experience in the social service sector. He began his career working with the chronically mentally ill population in New York City, creating and establishing a supported work program for young people suffering from serious mental disability. That program is still in existence today, enabling young people to experience meaningful success in the world of work and hopefully achieving a measure of independence in the future.

In 1990 Mr. Piro joined a child care organization called BOYS HOPE GIRLS HOPE whose mission is to provide academically motivated children in need with wrap around residential services and placement in a private college-prep environment. Mr. Piro advanced through several roles of progressive responsibility at Boys Hope Girls Hope to the position of Executive Vice President overseeing the executive staff of all 30 homes in 15 locations throughout the United States.

In 2014, Mr. Piro joined the staff of Covenant House of Michigan as its Executive Director, preparing to work with the entire team to continue the important work of responding to the needs of homeless youth in every possible way.

“I am both honored and excited to lead an exceptional team such as Covenant House Michigan in service to homeless and at-risk youth. I specifically pursued the position of Executive Director of CHM not only for its well-documented, exemplary reputation and work with young people but also to be a part of the vital services it provides for the most vulnerable and under served population in our state – that of homeless teens.”

Originally from New York City, Mr. Piro has resided in the Detroit area for over two decades. He holds advanced degrees in both Rehabilitation Counseling and Theological Studies.
