This past Wednesday we were joined by David Dwaihy. David is not only a teacher at the University of Liggett School, but is a founding member and co-owner of Detroit City Football (DCF). DCF is planning on opening a Field house in Detroit located in the Corktown neighborhood in Detroit.
In 2012, David was approached by a friend to start a community led soccer team. In the earliest years of DCF, the team's matches were held at Cass Tech High School with an average audience of around 150 fans. Their games were held at Cass Tech until their fans outgrew the stadium, then they moved to Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck in 2016. In order to play at Keyworth, many repairs needed to be done around the facility. Within a few months, DCF was able to raise over 750,000 to help save the stadium that was facing threats of demolition.
In 2014, DCF was the first in American sports history to wear an LGBTQ equality jerseys in a competitive match. In 2019, DCF was able to add their own women’s team, which David currently coaches. Currently the men’s team plays teams from around the world, including teams from Mexico, Germany and more.
Currently DCF plays their women’s and men’s soccer games at Keyworth, but they are looking to expand. David is hopeful that by 2027 DFC will have their first game at their stadium in Corktown. In choosing the location, DCF wanted to choose a community that they could serve, which is why they chose Corktown. Thank you David for sharing!
