On July 29th, the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club welcomed guest speaker Brianna Lanni, who shared information about the mission and impact of Gilda's Club Metro Detroit program.
Gilda's Club Metro Detroit was inspired by the legacy of comedian and actress Gilda Radner, one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the 1980's, Gilda discovered that, while she had access to excellent medical care, the emotional and social support available to people battling cancer was lacking. She envisioned a place where no one would have to feel alone, while facing cancer. In honor of her wishes and legacy, Gilda's Club was established to provide free support for individuals and families impacted by cancer.
Today, Gilda's Club Metro Detroit is dedicated to uplifting and strengthening people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care. The organization offers a wide variety of programs including support groups, educational seminars, healthy lifestyle classes, social activities, and referrals to additional resources. Through these services, Gilda's Club helps ensure that no one has to navigate cancer without the support of a caring and engaging community.
The organization is currently seeking volunteers to help both in person and virtually. Opportunities are available for individuals or groups and include helping with the front desk, assisting with workshops, maintaining the garden, leading yoga classes, managing clubhouse events, participating in community outreach, and supporting facility maintenance.
