Richard Martin shares upcoming plans for Detroit Zoo renovation and new ideas.
On August 20th, we were joined by Richard Martin from the Detroit Zoo.

Richard K. Martin, CFRE, is a seasoned fundraising professional with over 30 years of experience in philanthropy and nonprofit advancement. As Director of Individual Philanthropy for the Detroit Zoological Society, he manages major donor relationships and leads initiatives that support the Zoo’s mission, conservation efforts, and capital campaigns. His career has taken him across the globe, where he has served on international boards, built partnerships, and expanded the impact of organizations through strategic fundraising.

The Detroit Zoo welcomes an average of 1.2 million visitors annually, making it Michigan’s largest tourist attraction, with more than 42,000 member households. The Belle Isle Nature Center also draws over 100,000 visitors each year. Richard highlighted recent milestones, including the first gorilla born at the Zoo in 2024 and the birth of two red pandas this past June. Education remains a priority, with programs supporting schools, career pathways, and community engagement.

Conservation and sustainability are at the heart of the Zoo’s mission, including its zero-waste program. Looking ahead, the Zoo is developing “Discovery Trails,” an inclusive, immersive 7-acre environment expected to open in the spring of 2026. This project will include three areas: the Connect Zone, where children can interact with animals; the Gather Zone, with dining and retail space; and the Play Zone, featuring playgrounds, treehouses, and sensory sea life experiences; making this an enjoyable experience for all ages.

Thank you, Richard, for joining us!

We also welcomed new member Frank Palazzolo to the club.
