On October 14th, Dr. Roy Bishop, who shared his vision, the district’s achievements, and how our community can continue to support local education.

Dr. Roy Bishop, Jr. brings nearly two decades of public education experience to his role as Superintendent of the Grosse Pointe Public School System (GPPSS). A Saginaw native and former math teacher, Dr. Bishop served as a middle school administrator and elementary principal before becoming Deputy Superintendent in 2021 and later obtaining the district’s top leadership role. Guided by his personal mantra,"Be a leader. Be a learner. Be kind," he holds a doctorate in Organizational Leadership alongside degrees from Eastern Michigan, Marygrove, and Oakland Universities.

In a recent address ahead of his November induction into the Grosse Pointe Rotary, Dr. Bishop outlined his vision of "going for gold" across the district. GPPSS currently holds an A+ district grade, featuring seven Blue Ribbon schools, two award-winning newspapers, and a teaching staff where 88% hold master’s degrees. To build on this foundation, the district recently launched a Virtual School for flexible scheduling and expanded pre-K programs to support early childhood development for its 600-plus annual graduates.

Dr. Bishop also highlighted district priorities around safety, operational updates for historical buildings, and open communication through televised board meetings and listening sessions. Attributing the district's success to strong community support, he encouraged local residents to get involved by volunteering, subscribing to the weekly newsletter, or attending school events. Above all, Dr. Bishop’s collaborative approach remains anchored in his family life with his wife, Latoya, and their three children.

We thank Dr. Bishop for taking the time to inform our club and others about ways our community can get involved in helping support the education system!
