At our latest meeting, we heard from Mary Howlett, the marketing manager for the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. With the help of powerful partnerships and a shared vision for the future, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy has transformed what was once cement-covered ground into a beautiful, lush walkway for the community.
In recent years, the Conservancy has worked to improve multiple sites across the riverfront downtown. They helped restore the Dequindre Cut Greenway, a former railroad line that had become overgrown with weeds and grass, into a two-mile walkway. They have also worked on restoring several parks throughout Detroit.
Throughout the year, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy organizes events that bring the community together. Every winter, they host Winter Fest, featuring food, music, and ice sculptures. In the summer, they hold Fish Fest, which aims to teach young children how to fish. Additionally, they organize an annual Juneteenth celebration in the city.
Currently, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is working on major additions to their existing walkway, which will include a water pond, a covered basketball court, and a new playground. These additions will be a great asset to the community. Thank you, Mary, for joining us!
